Female fertility naturally declines with age, particularly after the age of 30. For women who would like to have children in the future but do not feel that now is the right time, egg freezing can therefore be a valuable option.
Egg freezing is the process of freezing unfertilised eggs so they can be used later, when you are ready to try for a pregnancy. The procedure uses modern vitrification techniques and is considered an established option for fertility preservation.
We invite you to an initial consultation to discuss your medical history and your family planning goals. You will receive clear information about the procedure, your options and the next steps, so you can make an informed decision.
After the consultation, your doctor will recommend specific tests and investigations, such as hormone testing and an ultrasound scan. Based on the results, a reproductive medicine specialist will create a personalised treatment plan and may recommend additional investigations where necessary.
Your care team will explain how to take your medication and support you throughout the entire protocol.
During this stage, you will self-administer hormonal medication at home to stimulate the ovaries and encourage the development of multiple mature eggs. Throughout the protocol, usually lasting 10–14 days, you will visit the clinic for regular monitoring with ultrasound scans and blood tests.
When the follicles and hormone levels reach the optimal stage, you will be advised to take a trigger injection to complete final egg maturation, approximately 36 hours before retrieval.
Egg retrieval is performed as a short procedure under controlled conditions with sedation. It usually takes around 10–15 minutes. You may experience mild discomfort afterwards, and most patients return to their normal activities within 24–48 hours.
The retrieved eggs are assessed and cryopreserved in the laboratory on the same day, in accordance with the medical protocol.
After cryopreservation, your eggs are stored safely. When you decide the time is right, your doctor will explain the available options for using them as part of a personalised treatment plan.
